How to Use a Makeup Sponge With a Grip for a Flawless Base

When I designed the Cloud Puff, I wanted the finish of a beauty sponge with the control of a powder puff. The grip changes how you apply makeup, so here's exactly how I use mine every morning before work.

1. Dampen it properly

Run the sponge under warm water and squeeze it out until it stops dripping. It should feel soft and bouncy, not soaking. A damp sponge sheers out foundation and stops it drinking up all your product.

2. Slide your fingers into the grip

Hold it like you'd hold a powder puff, with your fingers through the grip on the back. This is the part I love: your fingertips never touch the formula, so no foundation under your nails, and you're not squeezing the sponge out of shape while you work.

3. Dot, don't swipe

Put a few dots of foundation on your cheeks, forehead and chin. Then press and lightly bounce the sponge over your skin. Swiping drags product around and can leave streaks; pressing melts it in for that second-skin finish.

4. Use the edge for the tricky bits

The grip gives you much more control around your nose, under your eyes and along your hairline. Tilt the sponge and use the edge to blend concealer without disturbing the foundation around it.

5. Set with the flat side

Because it's shaped like a puff, the Cloud Puff works brilliantly for setting powder too. Press a little powder into the flat side and roll it over your under-eye and T-zone. Two tools in one, and one less thing in your bag.

6. Pop it in its case

Once you're done, put it straight in the vented travel case. It can breathe while it dries, and your bag stays clean.

That's it: a full base in a few minutes, clean hands, and a finish that looks like skin.
